Confronting a Parent's Sadness

Ever notice Mom or Dad fall into tears at the simplest thing? A recent study determined people in their 60s felt sadder than people in their 20s. The researchers propose the upside to this sadness is it reflects a greater compassion for other people and may strengthen social bonds.

But, there’s a fine line between melancholy and outright depression. If you suspect Mom or Dad may be suffering from an extended bout of melancholy, the Senior Assessment Center at Botsford Commons can help.

Working in conjunction with Mom’s or Dad’s regular physician, our geriatric specialists provide psychological, social, physical and diagnostic assessments. They discuss symptoms and diagnoses with your mom or dad and any family members she or he wishes to attend. Recommendations for effective, practical treatment options are given. For follow-up, Mom’s or Dad’s regular doctor receives the entire assessment.
