Antenatal Testing

Antenatal testing may be scheduled:

By a physician through the Antenatal Testing Office
When a patient is discharged from the New Beginnings Maternity Center, or
If a patient comes to Labor and Delivery without being scheduled for testing by a physician

Antenatal testing includes:

Non-Stress Tests (NST) Oxytocin Challenge
Tests or Contraction Stress Tests (OCT)
Amniotic Fluid Index, a measure of the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby (AFI)
Biophysical Profile, a combination of NST, AFI and the use of ultrasound to observe fetal movement, tone and breathing (BPP)

These tests can be done individually or in groups (i.e., NST or NST and AFI, or NST, AFI, OCT, or NST, AFI, OCT, BPP). The testing frequency can range from every two days to once per week, depending on the risk factors of the mother and/or reason for doing the test.

Patients should plan to be at the hospital for at least one hour. Testing may take longer if further evaluation is needed. Children under the age of 14 are not permitted in the Antenatal Testing Unit.
